Texas Sees Decline in Workplace Deaths But Still Leads Nation

Posted By Tom Rhodes Law Firm P.C. | 10-Dec-2014

Texas is known for being a business-friendly state, and many industries are eager to set up shop here. Although many corporations and companies manage to thrive in the Lone Star State, not all employees fare as well, according to workplace safety statistics. In fact, Texas consistently leads the nation in accidents, injuries, and deaths that occur on the job.

According to a report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics earlier this year, Texas leads the nation in workplace fatalities. Important facts from the report include:

  • Texas workplace deaths decreased in 2013 from the previous year
  • In 2013, 493 workers died on the job (536 died in 2012)
  • Texas has lead the U.S. in worker fatalities in 7 of the last 10 years
  • Other large states had significantly less workplace deaths (385 in California and 234 in Florida)

Although the data is considered preliminary and will be revised in the Spring, it continues to shed light on the dangerous conditions Texas workers face on the job. According to the statistics, these fatalities also occur across many different industries and in a variety of ways:

  • Transportation accidents caused the most workplace deaths (213)
  • Accidents involving objects and equipment killed 76 workers
  • Slip and fall accidents caused 73 deaths
  • Fires and Explosions killed 32 workers on the job
  • Exposure to harmful substances killed 31

Experts agree that Texas' track record is less than desired, and they suspect lax regulations, infrequent safety checks, and employer negligence contributes to the ongoing problem. All too often in the community, we hear of tragic workplace accidents. For many, it has come time to make significant changes.
